Every year in March during National Nutrition Month, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) reminds us to return to the basics of healthful eating. This year, AND is encouraging Americans to appreciate the pleasures, flavors, traditions, and experiences that food brings to our lives and Savor the Flavor.
Here are a few ways to savor the flavor of eating right in three easy steps:
Do you inhale your breakfast while running errands, or gobble take-out food for lunch at your desk only to forget what you had to eat and whether you enjoyed it? Eating is about more than the food. Slow down and pay attention to eating nutritious, flavorful foods, and avoid grabbing overly processed fare on the fly. Try your best to eat sitting down at a table, whether at home or in the company kitchen to encourage mindfulness. Being mindful of what you’re eating may increase eating satisfaction and make it easier to avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, like vending machine snacks and drive-through foods.
Pique your interest in produce.
Just 13% of Americans get the vegetables they need and on a daily basis. It’s easier than you think to include delicious and convenient vegetable choices to make for a more balanced eating plan.
